Troublesome Tooth

The woman patient was returning from the dentist’s office after her third successive attempt to have a tooth extracted. Each time she had just lost her nerve after being seated in the chair and had returned home, the tooth still intact.

After making the fourth engagement with the dentist the man said to his assistant, “When she is seated in the chair and I get my forceps on the tooth and glance at you, you give her a hypodermic in the hip.”

The operation went as planned, the shot was given and the tooth out.

“Now, said the dentist, “That wasn’t so bad, was it?” but wasastonished at her reply “No, but I never dreamed the roots went down that far!”

دندان پر زحمت

زن بیمار پس از سومین تلاش ناموفق برای کشیدن دندانش، در حال برگشتن از مطب دندانپزشک بود. او هر بار که بر روی صندلی دندانپزشک نشسته بود به علت از دست دادن روحیه اش از کشیدن دندانش منصرف شده و به خانه برگشته بود.

بعد از این که زن برای چهارمین بار از دندانپزشک وقت گرفت، دندانپزشک به دستیار خود گفت: «وقتی که او روی صندلی نشست و من انبر خود را روی دندانش گذاشتم، و با نگاه زیرچشمی به تو علامت دادم، یک زیرپوستی به کفل او تزریق کن.»

کار همان طور که برنامه ریزی شده بود انجام شد، تزریق صورت گرفت و دندان کشیده شد.

دندانپزشک به بیمار گفت: «حالا خیلی هم سخت نبود. همین طور است؟» و زن با این پاسخ خود او را متعجب ساخت: «نه، ولی من هرگز فکرش را هم نمی کردم که ریشه دندانم تا آن قدر پایین رفته باشد!»

خانم جوانی در سالن انتظار فرودگاهی بزرگ منتظر اعلام برای سوار شدن به هواپیما بود…

باید ساعات زیادی رو برای سوار شدن به هواپیما سپری میکرد و تا پرواز هواپیما مدت زیادی مونده بود ..پس تصمیم گرفت یه کتاب بخره و با مطالعه این مدت رو بگذرونه ..اون همینطور یه پاکت شیرینی هم خرید… اون خانم نشست رو یه صندلی راحتی در قسمتی که مخصوص افراد مهم بود ..تا هم با خیال راحت استراحت کنه و هم کتابشو بخونه. کنار دستش ..اون جایی که پاکت شیرینی اش بود .یه آقایی نشست روی صندلی کنارش وشروع کرد به خوندن مجله ای که با خودش آورده بود ..

وقتی خانومه اولین شیرینی رو از تو پاکت برداشت..آقاهه هم یه دونه ورداشت ..خانومه عصبانی شد ولی به روش نیاورد..فقط پیش خودش فکر کرد این یارو عجب رویی داره ..اگه حال و حوصله داشتم حسابی حالشو میگرفتم …

هر یه دونه شیرینی که خانومه بر میداشت ..آقاهه هم یکی ور میداشت . دیگه خانومه داشت راستی راستی جوش میاورد ولی نمی خواست باعث مشاجره بشه وقتی فقط یه دونه شیرینی ته پاکت مونده بود ..خانومه فکر کرد..اه . حالا این آقای پر رو و سوء استفاده چی …چه عکس العملی نشون میده..هان؟؟؟؟ آقاهه هم با کمال خونسردی شیرینی آخری رو ور داشت ..دو قسمت کرد و نصفشو داد خانومه و..نصف دیگه شو خودش خورد.. اه ..این دیگه خیلی رو میخواد…خانومه دیگه از عصبانیت کارد میزدی خونش در نمیومد.

در حالی که حسابی قاطی کرده بود ..بلند شد و کتاب و اثاثش رو برداشت وعصبانی رفت برای سوار شدن به هواپیما. وقتی نشست سر جای خودش تو هواپیما ..یه نگاهی توی کیفش کرد تا عینکش رو بر داره..که یک دفعه غافلگیر شد..چرا؟ برای این که دید که پاکت شیرینی که خریده بود توی کیفش هست .<<.دست نخورده و باز نشده>> فهمید که اشتباه کرده و از خودش شرمنده شد. اون یادش رفته بود که پاکت شیرینی رو وقتی خریده بود تو کیفش گذاشته بود. اون آقا بدون ناراحتی و اوقات تلخی شیرینی هاشو با او تقسیم کرده بود. در زمانی که اون عصبانی بود و فکر میکرد که در واقع آقاهه داره شیرینی هاشو می خوره و حالا حتی فرصتی نه تنها برای توجیه کار خودش بلکه برای عذر خواهی از اون آقا هم نداره.

چهار چیز هست که غیر قابل جبران و برگشت ناپذیر هست .

lie/lay

Lie and lay are two words that seem to cause some of the greatest confusion, even among those versed in English grammar. Lie means to recline; lay, on the other hand, means to put or place something.Lay is a transitive verb, meaning that there is always an object after it. (Lay the book on the shelf. Book is the object.) The principal parts of lie and lay are listed below.

lie: lie, lying, lay, (have) lain
lay: lay, laying, laid, (have) laid

The confusion generally seems to occur with the forms of lie. The following sentences illustrate the correct and incorrect uses of lay and lie.

lie/lay
I lie [not lay] on the floor when I watch television.
I lay my keys on the table when I arrive home from work.
lying/laying
I am lying [not laying] on the floor watching television.
I am laying my briefcase on my desk to remind me that I have work to finish.
lay/laid
Yesterday I lay [not laid] in bed all day with a fever.
Yesterday I laid my briefcase on my desk and forgot about it when I left for work.
(have) lain/(have) laid
I have lain [not have laid] in bed all day with a fever.
I have laid my briefcase on my desk to remind me that I have work to finish.

Although these are two extremely confusing verbs, with a little practice, you should have them down pat. Unfortunately, I don’t know of any helpful hints to use for remembering how to use lie and lay correctly. My only suggestion is to memorize them and practice.

Listenning skill is one of the most difficult among all other English learning skill because it gives you the least time for your brain to process.

Speakers never stop and let you understand word by word before moving on to the next sentence.If they do the conversation is going to take a whole day.

Moreover, there are hundreds different English pronunciation around the world. Even people in the same countries who speak the same language have different pronunciation.

It is normal that American people from the north do not fully understand those from the south. The way of life, climate and everything all impact pronunciation.

So, how do you overcome those? How can you understand when people speak English? Well, it is not that difficult.

This article is not telling you to practice hard, listen to the conversation tape or watch hundreds of Hollywood movie. Those are the things that you need to do anyway and already described in other English learning articles.

This article will tell you one simple trick that will help you live in any English speaking environment happily. The secret is that.

Do not blame yourself.

Many ESL thought they don't understand native English speakers because their skill is not good enough. This may or may not be true but it is surely not a good attitude.

It will discourage you and destroy your confidence. Sometimes, those natives just speak too fast and that even the natives themselves do not understand them. Sometimes, they do not truely understand the topic or they feel nervous so they can't produce understandable sentences. Have you ever experience that when you talk to anybody in your own mother tongue language? I am sure you do.

Now, you realize that it's not your fault. Just keep thinking that "they speak too fast" or "what are they talking about?" NOT "oh I don't understand them at all" or "will they know my English is poor?"

After you have positive attitude, the next step is easy. You just simply ask a kind of sentences below.

"Excuse me. Can you repeat it again?""It is very noisy here. Can you speak slowly please?"

Clearly, the sentences above blame the others but you. At this point, 99% of the speakers realize something wrong with them and they will speak again in the new way to try to make you understand.

Again, the learning part is another story here. You may have to search for the meaning of vocabularies or do more practices later but just never lose confidence to ask speakers to repeat the sentences, when you don't understand.

Remember, it is not your fault.

Here are some strategies to make you better in English

1 - Listen to English music

Listening to music is fun and enjoyable .Listen to the kind of music you like to hear .By using this method you can improve your English and have fun at the same time.

2- Talking with native speakers

It is the best way that I suggest to improve your English .Just try to talk with people who speak English as their native language.You will be fluent faster than you expect .

3- Read different kinds of books in English .

Raed books that are at your level and that you can get the main idea of .Remember, the more you read, the better you will be at writing.

4- Watch English movies with subtitles .

Watching movies helps you to learn more about different cultures. It's better to watch each movie atleast ten times to set all the new words and understand the whole sentences.Watch different kind of movies to learn different kind of words; for example , sci-fic,family movies , documentaries , etc.

Louis Braille was born in 1809 in a town near Paris. Louis was a bright boy, but he had a very serious disability; he was blind. Even so, he could get around the town by using a cane without getting mixed up. He counted the exact number of the taps that he made to reach the road, the store, and the other places where he had to go. He got along very well, but he was disgusted that he couldn’t read and write like other children. "Why should this have happened to me?" he asked accusingly. "How wonderful it would be if I could see the world around me" he said.

When Louis was ten years old, his parent sent him to school for the blind.

He was good at all subjects and even learned to play the organ .but none of these made him happy .one reason was that the blind were thought in a way that was much too slow for a quick mind like his.

The alphabet was taught by placing twigs in the shapes of letters on a table. Then the teacher guided the blind child's hands over these letters and explained what each one meant. Soon the child could read words and sentences with his fingers .he could then read raised cloth letters pasted on paper .but with this method, even a short story filled many big books.

When Braille finished school, he knew what he wanted to do. "There should be a faster way to learn to read and write "he said to himself,"I will find a way"

Braille thought that a code would be easier .but what kind of code? a special symbol for every word in the dictionary ? Shapes like squares or triangles for each of the letters of the alphabet? That might be as hard as reading letters. Braille tried many different kinds of codes, but for years he could do nothing in particular.

Then he found the answer in a story in the newspaper about a new signal code used by soldiers to or writes in the dark."If this were true "Braille thought,"obviously the same code could be used a blind man .i should've thought about this earlier ", he told his friend. Next morning Braille went to visit the man who had made the code, captain Charles Barbier . "We should have met previously" louis told him .barbier said he was glad to help. He showed Braille how he made bumps on a sheet of paper with a awl .this made dots come through the other side of the paper .a certain combination of dotes would then mean a certain word.

Braille was filled with joy. Apparently punching holes in paper would be fast and easy. But there were still more things he had to do .first he had to find a way to make dotes. second, he had to figure out what combination of dots should stand for each letter.

After a period of experimenting, he made different combinations of bumps that would stand for different letters. Every letter in the alphabet, as well as every punctuation mark had its own combination.

This is the secret of the Braille system of writing and reading. It was a great invention and affected the lives of million of the blind people in society. It is possible now for the blind to read and write almost as fast as people who can see.

Three engineers and three accountants are traveling by train to aconference.

At the station, the three accountants each buy tickets and watch as the three engineers buy only a single ticket.

“How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?” asks an accountant.

“Watch and you’ll see,” answers an engineer.

They all board the train. The accountants take their respective seats but all Three engineers cram into a restroom and close the doorbehind them.

Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes aroundcollecting tickets.

He knocks on the restroom door and says, “Ticket, please.”

The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on.

The accountants see this and agree it is quite a clever idea. So after the conference, the accountants decide to copy the engineers on the return trip and save some money. When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To theirastonishment, the engineers buy no tickets at all.

“How are you going to travel without a ticket?” says one perplexed accountant.

“Watch and you’ll see,” answers an engineer.

When they board the train the three accountants cram into a restroom and the three engineers cram into another one nearby. The train departs. Shortly afterward, one of the engineers leaves his restroom and walks over to the restroom where the accountants are hiding. He knocks on the door and says, “Ticket please.”

درب فقط اندکی باز می شود و یک دست که بلیت را نگاه داشته از شکاف در خارج می شود. رئیس قطار بلیت را می گیرد و می رود.

حسابدارها این اتفاق را می بینند و قبول می کنند که ایده خیلی زیرکانه ای است. به همین خاطر بعد از کنفرانس، حسابدارها تصمیم می گیرند که در مسیر برگشت از کار مهندس ها تقلید کنند و پول خود را صرفه جویی نمایند. آن ها وقتی به ایستگاه می رسند، فقط یک بلیت برای مسیر بازگشت می خرند. اما در کمال تعجب می بینند که مهندس ها اصلا بلیتی نمی خرند.

یکی از حسابدارهای بهت زده می گوید: «چگونه می خواهید بدون بلیت مسافرت کنید؟»

یکی از مهندس ها پاسخ می دهد: «ببین و تماشا کن!»

وقتی سوار قطار می شوند، سه حسابدار در یکی از دستشویی ها و سه مهندس در یکی دیگر از دستشویی های همان نزدیکی می چپند. قطار حرکت می کند. اندکی بعد یکی از مهندس ها از دستشویی خارج می شود و به سمت دستشویی ای که حسابدارها در آن پنهان شده بودند می رود. درب را می زند و می گوید: «بلیت لطفا.»
